What determines the written installation price
An equipment-only price, replacement installation, first-time installation, and project with duct or electrical changes cover different work. Ask for the exact matched equipment and a complete written scope before comparing costs.
The assessment should establish the cooling load, existing airflow and ducts, electrical requirements, line routing, access, and retained equipment compatibility. Ask which work is included, what is excluded, and how any change to the agreed scope and price will be approved.
What actually drives the price
System capacity: identify the cooling-load calculation and the output of the exact matched indoor and outdoor equipment.
Efficiency: compare published ratings for the matched models, alongside installed price, expected use, ducts, controls, and current electricity tariffs.
Ductwork: identify any required repairs or transitions and confirm that the existing blower and air distribution suit the selected equipment.
Electrical and line set: breaker capacity, disconnect, and refrigerant line length all affect labour.
Removal and disposal of the old unit, plus permits and any thermostat upgrade.
Central AC vs ductless: cost trade-off
Compare the assessed room loads and complete installation scopes for central and ductless options. Existing duct condition, indoor unit locations, line routing, electrical work, drains, controls, access, and finish repairs affect the comparison; the system type alone does not establish the lowest installed or operating cost.
For homes weighing both options, our central AC vs ductless mini-split comparison breaks down where each makes sense for a Toronto home.
Rebates can lower the real cost
An eligible heat pump providing heating and cooling may qualify for Ontario Home Renovation Savings. Eligibility and amounts depend on primary heating source, ownership or rental, rated capacity, home requirements, and qualified equipment. Use a participating contractor and obtain program pre-approval before installation; the program says installation before approval is ineligible. A cooling-only AC quote does not establish heat-pump rebate eligibility.

How to compare AC quotes without overpaying
Get two to three written quotes for the same scope: the same tonnage, comparable SEER2 rating, and the same inclusions for ductwork, electrical, removal, permits, and warranty. A cheaper quote that omits a required electrical upgrade or proper sizing is not really cheaper.
Ask each company how they sized the unit, what the labour warranty covers, and whether the price includes permits and old-unit disposal. Booking before the peak summer rush also tends to mean faster scheduling.
