Common furnace repairs and their typical cost range

An ignitor replacement usually runs $180 to $350 installed. Flame sensor cleaning or swap is $150 to $280. A blower motor replacement is one of the pricier repairs at $450 to $900 depending on motor type and whether the control board is involved.

Inducer motor issues land between $400 and $750. Pressure switch problems tend to be $200 to $400. These are ballpark ranges for the GTA, not guarantees, because access, brand, and system age all shift the number.

What makes a furnace repair more expensive

Older furnaces with discontinued parts cost more because sourcing takes time or aftermarket options need to be matched carefully. Compact mechanical rooms with poor access add labour time.

If the diagnostic reveals multiple issues — say a cracked inducer housing and a worn blower motor — the conversation shifts from repair to replacement. A good contractor separates those decisions clearly instead of bundling everything into one quote.

Diagnostic fees and how they work

Most GTA HVAC contractors charge $100 to $180 for a diagnostic visit. That fee covers the technician's time to isolate the failure, not just to show up and look at the furnace.

Some companies waive the diagnostic fee if you approve the repair. Others keep it separate. Either approach is fine as long as you understand the total before signing off.

When repair cost signals replacement

A useful rule: if the repair costs more than 40% of a new furnace and the existing unit is over 16 years old, get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote.

That does not mean you have to replace it. It means you should know both numbers before deciding. A $700 repair on a 20-year-old furnace might buy you one more winter — or it might be the last repair before a heat exchanger failure makes the whole unit unsafe.
